Breed Notes
9th July

I was sad to hear news of the demise of a very popular lady in Scotland. Many of our newer exhibitors  may not recognise the kennel affix of Dalrannoch. This belonged to Anne Hutchison, who was a very knowledgeable lady, excellent steward and a “fixture” at so many of the Scottish Shows. She will be missed by many and I have to thank Dareen Bridge, Emmsmoor, our official Breed Archivist for supplying much of the following concerning Anne (and others), so a big thank you to Dareen.
Anne’s judging career in Roughs started in 1983 with an appointment at the August SKC where she made up Ch Claredawn Consor and Sandra Wigglesworth won the BCC and BOB with Sandiacre Sweet Georgia Brown. Two Club shows followed, at Scottish Breeds and Collie Club of Wales, with Lynway Sorry I’m A Lady and Corydon Gold Spur winning respectively.

A long trip down south followed with an appointment at Southern Counties where the Blake’s won with Corydon Moon Miracle and our own Antoc Albertine took the tickets.

An appointment in Ireland produced winners for Dave Boland and his now Ch Aberthorne Achilles of Bolandale but BIS went to Marianne Grindley and Lanrue Sarah Jane. Richmond followed with the CC’s going to Lanrue Storming Norman and a title for Rayaltra Little Rascal

An appointment at Ayrshire Collie in 1998 for bitches followed with Ir Ch Kynan C’Est La Vie winning. In 2001 and due to judge Border Union but was cancelled due to the Foot & Mouth outbreak.

In 2006 she judged bitches at Crufts, with CC to Ch Samhaven Toast, her 4th, belonging to Alison Grainger. Rob & Naomi McDowall took the RBCC with Mallicot Crazy In Love at Birkmyre.

After this appointment she judged at Bournemouth in 2007, and if I recall, this was a year when the weather had been awful and the state of the ground at New Park, Brockenhust, was so poor that the show had to be re-arranged in a different part of the show ground. Her winners that day were Birkmyre Toast Master CC, with Carriswillow Riot at Samhaven in reserve. Bitch CC went to Ch Samhaven Toast of The Isles at Ribans, her 5th with Sachenda Say It With Roses in Reserve.

Her final appointment for Roughs was at Lancashire & Cheshire in 2014 where she judged bitches with Ch Brooklynson Fifth Avenue won her 5th and Samhaven Classical Music taking the reserve and her bitch taking BIS

Anne was also approved for Border Collies, Samoyeds, German Shepherds and Shetland Sheepdogs, and the Group. She also judged a few breeds at CC level in the Terrier Group. With many of her family in New Zealand, her funeral, when announced will be a quiet affair.

Whilst clearing out a few cupboards, I came across a catalogue dated 1968 for the West of England Collie Society, who held an Open show at the WD & HO Wills Hall, Bedminster, Bristol. If you think the name of the venue is familiar, it is the cigarette company, the one and the same who promoted their products by issuing small cigarette cards inside each packet! Some of these cards depicted famous sports people, birds and dogs. Some are now quite valuable and can often be found for sale on some popular bidding sites and also on stands at dog shows (when we used to go to them!)

President at that time was Miss Phil Grey (Ladypark) with Judges listed as Jim Broderick (Shearcliffe) who judged Roughs and Jean Pallister (Durnovaria) judging Shelties

Secretary was listed as Mr Brian Clements (Amberdusk) from Calne in Wiltshire.

The show opened at 12 noon, with judging at 1pm (Prompt) and Prize money of £1.00, 10 shillings for second and 5 shillings for 3rd place, along with Diplomas, Rosettes for Class Winners, BIS, BOSIS and BPIS

The entry was a remarkable, bearing in mind this was a Club OPEN show,  140 dogs, giving 304 entries from 80 exhibitors who included, Diana Cochrane, Flo Denning, Pam Hindes, Jean Layzell, Pat & Geoff Mildon,  Clare Molony, Neville and Val Plimmer, Vic Salt, Brian Webb and  Aileen Speding to name but a few

Special Puppy Dog or Bitch had 15 entries, with Mrs Arthur and Chateroux Sunrise winning, Jumist Rustic Treasure in 2nd, Rainpark Isabella 3rd, Antoc Pandemonium of Coolderry 4th and VHC Rainpark Honey Bunny.

Puppy D had 12 new dogs and 8 from the previous class, Diana Cochrane won this with Duntiblae Dog Star. 2nd was Tawnykirk Adam Arrogant for Ros Barker and Vic Salt took 3rd with Woodlyn Glade.

Spl Beginners D/B had 8 new and 3 old entries and Rainpark Isabella won this with Amberdusk Geisha Rose 2nd, Marcellus Merthyr Kiss for Mrs Lewis in 3rd

Maiden went to Woodlyn Glade, beating Chateroux Sunrise with Fairmark Blue Fanfare for Mrs Betty  Hodgetts 3rd
Novice went to Mr Doel with Geoffdon Kettledrum a new entrant of the 9 competing

Graduate was won by Duntiblae Dog Star winning over Geoffdon Kettledrum and Westcarrs Geoffdon Imagination owned by Clare Molony

Limit Dog was won by Westcarrs Geoffdon Imagination whilst Hope & Davies stood 2nd with Janlynns Blue Marquis
Open Dog went to Val & Neville Plimmer with Firestone Muhammad Ali, with Clare Molony in 2nd and Ch Chateroux Lysander standing in 3rd

Puppy Bitch had 12 new babies along with 4 from a previous class. Winning this was Geoffdon New Romance for Pat & Geoff Mildon, 2nd was Tawnykirk Miss Fizz and Diana Cochrane took 3rd with Duntiblae Tilehouse Tricky.

Unfortunately, Novice, Graduate, Limit and Open are not marked, but I did notice that Antoc Daydream was entered in Open but do not know how she was placed as memory of wins diminishes with time, so a word for you all out there, if you are keeping catalogues, please mark them for possible reference in the future!

There were also classes scheduled for Special Restricted Breeders D/B. Spl Blue Merle or Tricolour Open and a class of 7 called Special Restricted Smooth Collies.

This catalogue, which was duplicated and stapled together also, included notification of the WECS forthcoming Ch Show to be held in April 1969.

This Ch show was judged by Tom Purvis (Danvis) and listed in the KCSB in alphabetical order, the major dog winners were:
Cheryldene Moonskater of Dunsinane, owned by Audrey Chatfield won Limit Dog, Corydon Don Vicisity for John & Barbara Blake was 2nd in Open and Ch Royal Ace of Rokeby won Open and CC whilst Tawnykirk Adam Arrogant was 2nd in Limit
Beaublade Duntiblae Doch-n-Doris won Limit for Derrick & Thelma Clark; Glyngarth Craig’s Princess took 2nd in Limit for Mrs E J Davies; Grancoats Blue Lady of Fairdale Owned by Mrs J Smith and bred by Mr & Mrs Westwell won the RCC from a Non Qualifying class.
