ROUGH COLLIE BREED NOTES

Firstly news concerning the Ayrshire Collie Club who recently held their AGM and now have a new Secretary in Mrs. Irene Buchanan Green. Now news of another Veteran Warrant. This is for Dr Lynda Boyle and her 11 year old lady, Dawnee. Better know as Carristina Radiant Sunrise over Barrenclough who now carries all the following titles, JW and ShCm. Lynda brought her out of retirement to gain the required points for this award and she is sired by the late Ch Lynmead Simply In My Soul out of Carristina Gracious Dawn over Colyheart and she was born October 2008.

Now to British Collie Championship Show, held on Feb 29th at Coventry and headed by Secretary Duna Jones, helped out on the day by a smaller committee than usual with Rob Shipp as Show Manager.

The entry was slightly lower than usual for judges Merv Casling (Meranne who judged dogs); Val Brown (Mertrisa for bitches) and Anne Smith for Smooths who along with husband Nick have the Tentola affix but now spend much of their time between their home base in Spain and the UK. Best In Show was judged by Eleanor Kitchen Seriema who had the pleasure of awarding, for the 5th time the prestigious 100 guinea BIS Challenge Trophy to Trevor Hayward and the lovely Veteran Smooth, Ch Clingstones Hot Shot at Foxearth, better known to all as Petra who has won this herself 4 times, so a new record for many to beat!

In between the judging, there were quite a few presentations, so dealing with the canine ones first, The Annual Ladypark Puppy Points Trophy went back home to Tiganlea with T. Twinkling Star who gained a total of 80 points during the show year for John & Caroline Tipper. Runner Up was Val and John Geddes with Ingledene Mercury Risin’ with 73 and other places included Melissa Lockyer and her Perfect Timing du Clos De Sea-Wind for Gataj (Imp) in 3rd with 58 points. 4th place went to Jane Margetts and her Lynmead Lemonade at Collingvale with 41. Paris Venise de Bois des Amazones and Jo Brooker took 5th with 36 points. Robin Blaikie took 6th and 10th place with his duo of Kourika King Pin (35) and Kourika Kover Girl equal on 27 points. Sophie Wray-Ramsden took 7th with Takhisis Magic of Dreams whilst Stacy Steven was rewarded with 8th place and 31 points with Cambrogan Blowlin A Hoolie, or as we know her at home Brooke; John & Margaret Congdon won 9th place with a home bred Aaronwell, A. Ashley Banjo with Jeremy Barron and Carron Jenkins taking equal 10th with Tiganlea Twinkling Sapphire at Rannaleroch. Each finalist received a commemorative rosette from Bertie Smeijsters on behalf of the BCC.
Then followed an impressive parade of Champions, each of who received a lovely named rosette. There were some absentees but 14 Roughs and 5 smooths had entered for all to see and hear about their achievements.

Now to the other presentations, keeping the “Life Time Achievement Award” a secret is no mean feat and with the help of some close friends, Rene Cozens, Bhyllsacre, was persuaded to attend and very much to her surprise, she was awarded the 2020 award. Rene, who started in collies, far too many years ago to recall has produced many Champion collies under her affix. Perhaps one of her most well-known ladies was Ch Bhyllsacre Querida Mia, who was used as a model for a well known company specializing in collie models. Others from this kennel include: Ch Bhyllsacre Dream Girl, Golden Gem, the group winning B. Just Kate and her brother Just So; the sisters Mia’Ly A Dream and Mia’Ly Golden,  daughters of Querida Mia and the dual CC winning male, B. Shades of Gold. Well done Rene.

Another presentation was made to celebrate the 80th birthday of Club Secretary, Duna Jones who is still recovering from shoulder surgery. Many of her friends had organised this and a complete surprise. Many photos of this are available for all to see on the web site.

Now to the main event, the Judging. Merv Casling, looking as dapper as usual started on his dogs with a paper entry of about 45 with at least about 10 missing on the day. Merv ended up with John & Margaret Congdon’s very well know blue Merle, Jive, Fr Ch & UK Ch Jugband Blues du Close de Sea-Winning his 10th CC. I think we can all recall how he is bred. Although the 2nd in Open was called in for the RDCC, this went to the winner of Limit, Jo Brooker and Corisian French Connection JW. A sable, sired by I Am Fantastic du Bois des Amazones for Corisian (Imp Fra) out of Lovely Flower du Bois des Amazones for Corisian (Imp Fra) and he was born in October 2017.

Best Veteran was a win for the tricolour, Ch Willowdene Double or Quits at Wassail, bred by Pauline Lowery, sired by Rosschell Bobby Dazzler at Wassail ex Wassail Dyna at Willowdene. Owned by Robin Blaikie, this was the start of another set of good wins for our Scottish exhibitors.

MP was Vanessa Cronk and her tricolour, Chelborn That’ll Do, whilst Puppy dog went to Melissa Lockyer and her homebred sable, Gataj Struck by Lightning who ended up best puppy dog.

Val Brown had about 65 bitches on paper but also had roughly 10 missing and her choice for the BCC was the winner of Limit, Chantique Cinderella at Starlenga, owned by Margo, Gerry and Louise Walker from Scotland. This is her 2nd CC, having taken her first at LKA from Audrey White last year. She is sired by Chantique Star Dust out of I’m Scarlett Johansson of Moon River for Chantique and bred by Andre and Chantal Scott who were there to see her win Limit and the CC.

Standing 2nd in the same class was another sable, Riverside Song Happy Ending for Rayvel (Imp Rom), bred by Olga Cruscov and owned by Glenys Plank. She is sired by Riverside Song Big Boss Man out of Salsina Shared Promises and was born October 2015 and adds the Reserve CC to her collection including 2 CC’s.

Veteran was another nice win for Jane Margetts and her Collingvale Crème Caramel JW (Ch Jopium Touch of Soul for Triburle JW ex Ch C. Crème Brulee); homebred she was born December 2011.

MP bitch went to Louise Walker and Starlenga All About Me, a tricolour, sired by Ch Jugband Blues de Clos de Sea-Wind Via Aaronwell out of Nelinka de Remember Our Love for Starlenga (Imp Fra) and she was born July 2019. Puppy Bitch was won by Andre & Chan Scott with Chantique Déjà vu (Mr Burberry of Lowlands Green Valley for Chantique (Imp Fra) ex Chantique Fairy Dust and although the litter sister, C. Ooh La La won Maiden, both had to give way to Louise and her tricolour baby.
The BCC is another “forward looking” clubs and appointed not only a BIS judge but the same judge to decide on BOB Rough, which is a much simpler way of conducting the final awards and does save time at the end of a long day.

Eleanor Kitchen chose John & Margaret’s Jive for BOB, with the bitch RBOB, Best Puppy went to his daughter, Starlenga All About Me and Best Veteran to Robin and his triclour, so 2 of the 3 top awards found their way back to Scotland.
For all the final awards, the Smooth Petra went BIS, RBIS to the Blue Rough and BPIS to the triclour Rough and as Petra is a Veteran, this award was automatic.

For those who follow numbers and registrations, the October – December BRS is now available. There were 29 litters recorded and 147 new registrations.

Imports totaled 10; from Italy (2), Belgium (1), whose colour is recorded as Not recognised by the KC!  France sent us 3 more; Romania exported 3 and 1 from Slovenia.

23 Collies had a change of name and 84 were recorded as transfer of ownership. We did however export 9 collies, 2 to Norway; 1 Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Italy, with the remainder 3 going to Finland.

12 New KCSB entries have been recorded along with 20 CC issues, 1 New Champion Cert, a new Junior Warrant and a Show Certificate of Excellence.

Our final total for registrations during 2019 is just 531 down by 156 on last years total of 687 – something which all involved with the breed could take note

On the health side, just 24 collies are recorded as having various health tests recorded including eye/hips/DM etc
