Breed Notes We may not have any actual DOG shows to go but I notice plenty of collie folk entering on-line shows with a few good all breed wins. Now to the news, one of our Breed Clubs is going to hold on an On-Line Christmas Show, yes, it is not the same but this one is being organised by the EACA and runs from 1st December to 24th December, so get your entries ready! There will be 22 classes for Roughs, Dogs to be judged by Tomas Rohlin (Rollington) and Bitches by Rainer Vuorinen (Rainwood). The 14 classes for smooths will be judged by John Blake, who will also judge BOB, BP, BV and BIS. The full classification will be announced shortly and all photos should be of dog standing WITHOUT a handler in view. Classes will be judged like a proper show, with the age of the dog on the first day of the show December 1st. Entry Fees are £2.00 per photo and all profits to Collie Rescue.
Now back to history and as I have found a catalogue of Richmond, here are a few details for you all The first record of Richmond Show was in 1895, where it is listed just as Richmond (Surrey) but sadly no further records are shown for a while and in 1901 on July 3rd, Mr. F B Craven judged. It would appear that only 1 smooth was present but the rough winners included Ch Woodmansterne Tartan, ownened by Rev Hans Hamilton who had also won at Crufts, Birmingham and LKA whilst Miss P M Deveson-Jones won with Wellesbourne Prospect Richmond continued holding shows mid summer up until the outbreak of hostilities, which affected many. It has had a few venues and those of you may recall the re-scheduling of one particular show following the death of the Princess of Wales in 1997, as the show was to have been held on Crown Property at Ascot, before the re-build of the new Royal Ascot stands. The committee and dog press at the time, and do remember we did not have “Social Media” then, contacted every exhibitor to advise them that the show would be held the following day. A massive job then and I would hate to think of the phone bills. The late Terry Thorn judged and gave the CC to Gwen & Geoff with Myriehewe Persian Heights, and I think his 3rd CC, with Val Geddes and Ingledene Slave To Love in Reserve. Val took the BCC with Ch Ingledene Penny Lover with our Antoc Crystal Rainbow in reserve. Now back to 1956, Richmond Ch Show was held in October at the Empire Hall and Galleries in Olympia under KC Rules, with Prize money of £2 for first, £1 for second and 12 shillings for 3rd. The entry fee for Members was 10/6d per class, Non Members at 12/6d both with an additional benching fee of 2/6d per dog. Members were free and the cost of the show catalogue was just 5 shillings! What is interesting that back in 1956 Our Dogs – The Leading Kennel Journal could be delivered, every Friday, post free for 1shilling and 2d, or for £3 7 shillings and 6 pence annually to include the Christmas Number. The Secretary then was Mrs. S Kearns, one time secretary of the Collie Association and she lived in New Malden, Surrey. She is also listed as holding the posts of Show Manager and Treasurer along with Secretary! Officials included, President, Capt Leslie Williams, Chairman, Mr. O Walters and Vice Chairman, Mr. H S Lloyd of the Ware Cockers The entry was a total of 2,702 dogs giving 4859 entries and Rough Collies had an entry of 27 giving 58 entries for Judge, Mr. Archie Watt from Scotland with ring stewards listed as Margaret Osborne and Jean Lanning and judging took place on the First Floor Gallery The exhibitors included, Audrey Chatfield (Dunsinane based in Leeds) Mrs. K Cliffe from Brighouse (Lyncliffe); Nadine George from Sussex (Beulah’s); Phil Grey from Harrogate (Ladypark); Joan Hill and Judith Plummer (Selskars); Kath and Alan Jeffries (Jefsfire); Frank Mitchell (Glenmist); Doris Mortiboy (Silvermoor’s) and May Young (Ugony). So as now, exhibitors were prepared to travel long distances. The classification was Junior Dog or Bitch, Novice Dog, Graduate Dog, Limit Dog, Open Dog, the same for bitches and a Special Breeders Class Dog or Bitch. Junior (8) was won by Frank Mitchell and Sapphire of Glenmist (Ch Liberty of Ladypark ex Rifflesee Reward of Glenmist. 2nd went to Selskars Sweetness (Ch Ugony’s Golden Son O’Lad of Rifflesee ex Danmars Wonder Queen). 3rd was Mrs. E McCoy with Black Stormcloud of Deachum (Coverdale Black Tarquin ex Golden Morn of Deachum) There were 2 Novice dogs, and first went to May Young and Ugony’s Golden Futurist (Ch Beulah’s Golden Fu Sun Kin ex Ch Ugony’s Golden Gloria) beating Seasedge Golden Sunflash, owned by Mr. Smale from Swanage. He was sired by Seasedge Golden Miracle ex Ugony’s Golden Cassandra.
Mr. David McPherson travelled down from his home at Glen Villa, Glenmaris, By Airdrie Scotland to win both Limit and Open with Gunner of Glenturret (Ch Gunner of Mariemeau ex Vanity of Glenturret) Joan Hill and Judith Plummer won Novice bitch with Selskars Sweetness whilst Kath and Alan Jeffries, who were living at Erdington, Birmingham, won Graduate with Whitelea Watastra (Whitelea Why Boy ex Ch Sudburough Lochdorna) beating Frank Mitchell and Rifflesee Reward of Glenmist Sheildon Sequin (Ch Loyal of Ladypark ex Sheildon Fantasia) won both Limit and Open for Mr. George Waddell, from Glasgow with Phil Grey and Lisa of Ladypark (Int Ch Libretto of Ladypark ex Lindy Lou of Ladypark) second and in 3rd, Frank Mitchell with Sapphire of Glenmist who had won the mixed novice class The London Collie Club, under Thelma Lowe offered, confined to LCC Members Diplomas for BOB and BOS. The CC’s went to: Gunner of Glenturret with Beulah’s Golden Mity Solario with Shieldon Sequin taking the BCC and Ugony’s Golden Fabelita ( Raldas Beulahs Golden Fable ex Shencolne Solitaire) in reserve as she was 2nd in the Open class behind Sequin.
