Breed Notes
27th November 2020

Now the news has been recently announced, that all being well, Crufts could take place in July and I thought I may up date you all on some of our previous Crufts Judges.

There have been many couples (husband and wife, father/daughter; mother/daughter) who have actually judged at this show, but according to my records, I can only find 2 couples (husband and wife) who judged at the same show in the same year! More of these later.  Also  a few have been re-invited to judge and, in my opinion, many who were well deserving of the appointment but up until now have never been asked and sad to say, perhaps will never be able to.

One overseas judge, from Finland, the very well known and respected judge, Rainier Vuorinen (Rainwood) has judged our breed twice at Crufts, in 2001 with Peptide Lollipop winning and again in 2004 where he judged dogs and gave his CC to Ch Phreelancer Phrosty Moon Over Corydon

Clare Molony (Westcarrs) judged in 1951 and 1959 and her winners were: Ch Lochinvar of Ladypark and Lena of Ladypark.  Ch Mywicks Meadowlancer and Eden Esmeralda won in 1959.  In 1973 she awarded CC’s to Ch Fellview Consort and Ch Tameila Vanity Blue.

Prior to the 1940’s and from 1920 onwards, apart from the years when no shows were held, quite a few judges had stints at Crufts; it would appear on a regular basis.  Mr John Powers judged in 1924 and 1927/ and again in 1928 and followed this up with appointments in 1931 and 1933. Mr Tait (Wishaw) had appointments in 1912, 1917 and in 1926 whilst Mr R H Roberts judged in 1929, 1933, and 1938

For those newer exhibitors it may be of interest to remind you that up until 1991 Crufts Centenary Show, there was only ever a single judge appointed but when Aileen Speding (Antoc) drew an entry of 488 /547 a separate judge had to be appointed due to the size of the overall entry!

Going back to 1934 we had Mr W W Stansfield(Laund)  judging but although daughter Ada was one of the youngest to award CC’s it was not until 1972 when she was offered the big one!

Her father awarded both Mariemeau Brilliantine and Ashtead Annabel CC’s whilst Ada gave the CC to Ch Antoc Vicar of Bray and Ch Clanayre Claudine

Len & Prue Green (Coverdales) both judged, Prue in 1976 and Len in 1979 and their winners were Ch Johrenda Sheldean Mystic Magic and Ch Stelroy Rhapsody In Blue and Danvis Ladyvale Blue Macade and Ch Cathanbrae Verily Verily

In 1980 Kath Jeffries (Jefsfire) judged and gave the CC’s to: Ch Danvis Ladyvale Blue Macade and Ch Bririch Blue Yvette but husband Alan had to wait until 1984 for his appointment and his winners were Ch Tashadon Tommy Tucker and Ch Saheltra’s Sally Sunshine at Clickam.

1983 saw Geoff Mildon (Geoffdon) centre stage with his winners being Ch Jeffield Esquire and 10 years later, wife Pat judged Dogs with Ch Jasand Jack Daniels winning.

Barbara Blake (Corydon) judged in 1998 with her winning bitch being Ch Ingledene Penny Lover and husband John judged the Dogs in 2003 with Brooklynson Liz Taylor taking the Bitch CC. Shortly, daughter Miranda will become the third family member to Crufts, something of a record for the kennel.

1992 saw the first of the Lynway Clarke family officiating when Ena judged and awarded the Dog CC to Ch Abbeywater Faberge at Evad. Son Alan judged in 2003 with Camanna The Copyist taking the Dog CC and in 2017 Alan’s wife Doreen also judged Dogs awarding the CC to Ch Telforth Tony

Sandra Wigglesworth judged dogs in 1988, both sexes and her CC’s went to Tameila Gordon Bennet and Tashadon Jenny Wren. In 2002, husband Jack had the honour of judging bitches in 2002 awarding Ch Samhaven Forgotten Charm the CC and on a second appointment in 2008 where he again judged bitches; the CC went to Ch Carriswillow Legacy

Aileen Speding first judged in 1970 with Ch Thistleblue Bluelands Boy and Colrenes Mywicks Merlow Moonbeam being her winners and again in 1991 where she chose dogs and found her winner in Ch Emryks Runnaway.  Daughter Carole Smedley judged Dogs in 2005 with Ch Karava Kempez taking the CC and again in 2019 when Ch Tiganlea Tinkerbelle at Revdvikki annexed the CC

2007 saw Geoff Duffield (Angelfield) judging bitches with Ch Samhaven Toast winning whilst wife, Gwen Beadon (Myriehewe) judged Dogs in 2015 and her winner was Coarhabeg Rider In The Sky Over Bluchip.

Now to the only husband and wife teams, I can find who judged the breed on the same day.

In 1994, Peter and Lisa Burtenshaw actually judged together, with an overall entry of 323/353. They held the famous Pelido affix, and over the years produced far too many Champions, in all three colours to list here but their influence on the breed goes without saying. Based in southern England, they travelled far and wide, often with great success.  Lisa judged the Dogs with Ch Wendardebs Bloo Swizz at Abbestone took the CC and Peter’s choice was Roanburn Black Cherry

Based in Northen Ireland, the Cregagh kennel of Joe and Nan Kirk was also very influential, housing Champions in Roughs, Shetland Sheepdogs and Bearded Collies. They judged together  in 2000 and received an entry of 193 dogs and 173 bitches. Dog CC went to Ch Phreelancer Phrosty Moon Over Corydon with Brooklynson Golden Fashion winning the Bitch CC from Nan.

I accept there may be others who have officiated at Crufts, so many apologies if I have left you out

Carole Smedley (Antoc)
