Breed Notes LKA 1900. PART 2
Continuing on of the winners at this show, for Collies and Sheepdogs
There was a Brace class, for any colour, with a prize of silver Eau de Cologne Case. This had one entry belonging to Mrs S Barber with Tiptree Inspector and Tiptree Conquest.
The Brace class was won by Mrs. Brigham and this was followed by an Open Class for White Collies with one entry, Cambridge Snowball, sired by Westbury Charlie out of Mischief and owned by Miss C T Brass. I have no idea if this was a Rough or a Smooth! There were Breeder, Stud Dog and Merle classes, all of which Mrs. Brigham won with Ch Rockcliffe Veto. Following on from the Rough and Smooth classes, was a section marked “Sheepdogs” with the winner taking the “Shamrock Spoon” which was won by Ch Fairweather. Open dog was won by Sir James, owned by Mrs. Ellen Mitchell who also won Limit, which then, followed the Open Class. Ch Fairweather, owned by Mrs. Fare Fosse won Open bitch and Limit was won by Miss Mary Scot Wills with Sallie In Our Alley. There is an advert for Wellesbourne Chum, the property of Mrs. Tomkins and he is described as “The Black, Tan and White Collie, he is a very racily built dog, with a splendid body, legs and feet, beautiful head, eye and expression and small well carried ears. He is absolutely teaming with quality, which like his sire Wellesbourne Conqueror, he imparts to his progeny. The first litter exhibited, sired by Chum, took a first at the last Collie Show” Bitches should be sent to Snowlands Kennels, Bishop’s Stortford along with a Stud Fee of £12.12shillings.
Now to some of the descriptions and provisos listed for the trophies on offer, which numbered some 600 and some confined to Members of the LKA, and subject to conditions and rules No 40, as printed in the Ladies Kennel Journal, price 1/- to the Manager of the LKJ, Bedford Row, London. There was a “Champion of Champion, 70 guinea challenge cup, presented by C J Rotherham, Vet to the LKA and the winner of the trophy also won 1 Guinea in commemoration of the win There were 5 separate challenge prizes, of £20 in 20 fully paid up £1 shares in the Ladies Kennel Journal, as long as you were an annual subscriber, to cover, Sporting, Hound, Terrier, Non-Sporting and Pet Dog categories. The Pet dogs included Chow, Poodle, Schikerpee, Pomeranian, Pug, Toy Spaniel, Maltese, Italian Greyhound and Toy Griffons! Under the heading of LKA Challenge Bracelets was “The Ormskirk” presented by our own Tom Stretch along with numerous “Puppy Cups” including one for Roughs. Each of these awards was also given a Commemorative Ornamental Card as a keepsake of the win
Six silver challenge set of Fruit Knives, in a case, value 5 Guineas, could be won by the Stud Dog, whose progeny shall have scored the most points at the Ladies Summer Shows. Other interesting awards included 2 Pierced Silver Desserts Spoons (Newfoundland) Silver Flower Beaker in a case (Greyhound, Whippet and Pointer); 4 Silver Fruit Spoons in a Morocco case could be won by a Bobtail.
Puppy Challenge Prizes varied between a Silver Tea Service, a Silver Mounted Glass Jug, Silver Sugar Castor, Silver Framed Mirror, Pair Silver Vases, Pair of Silver Fish Carvers and a set of 4 Silver Salt Cellars and Spoons Now to some of the more obscure prizes listed: There was a Silver Tea Service on offer for any dog or bitch of any breed entered from Holland, in Deerhounds the winner of the Wolverley Challenge took home a Turkey Carpet to the value of 10 guineas. There was the Goodwood Cup, presented by Lady Algernon Lennox for the best Pekingese in show, to be competed for 3 times but only at the Summer Shows. There were many cups on offer for Pomeranians, one for the best Blue and in Poodles there was a 30 guinea Curly Poodle Challenge Cup, presented to the LKA by Mr. Hume Long. In Toy Spaniels there was an Oil Painting by Yarnold, to the value of 18 guineas, presented by Mrs. Herring for the best Toy Spaniel, sired by one of Mrs. Herring’s stud dogs!
Prizes to be won outright included a Silver Framed Mirror, presented by the proprietors of “The Gentlewoman” for the best Hound of the following varieties, Bloodhound, Deerhound, Irish Wolfhound and Borzoi. A Silver Dog Collar, presented by Miss E M Paice was on offer to the smallest Black and Tan dog over 12 months old!
Mrs. L Scarlett offered a Silver Calendar Frame, valued at half a guinea to the exhibitor making most entries whilst Mrs. Langton offered a plated Table lamp and shade to the best Maltese Male, exhibited in Limit by a Member of the LKA. The Ladies Field gave a Sterling Silver Challenge Cup for the Best Puppy or Novice in the Collie Class, bred and owned by a lady, to be won three times
On checking some records for this trophy, it was won, on one occasion by the Princess of Wales (later Queen Alexandra) and her Ch Alex and in 1901, the Princess de Montgylon won it with her tricolour Collie bitch, Ch Old Hall Beatrice.
It would appear that many of those trophies listed back in 1900 would not be acceptable to our Kennel Club today as the provisos for winning of some were somewhat restrictive but oh so interesting.
