'A recent Rough and Smooth Collie herding taster day brought together owners, breeders, and enthusiasts to explore and observe the natural herding instincts still present within the breeds. Organised by Megan Gatt and led by trainer Caitlin of Claygates Sheepdogs, the event took place in Norfolk using calm Hebridean sheep suited to introductory training work.

The day involved a series of structured assessment sessions where each dog was introduced to livestock in a controlled environment, as well as demonstrations with the trainers dogs of different herding styles. Dogs initially worked on lead or long lines before progressing off lead if appropriate. Participants observed a wide range of reactions: some dogs showed little interest and remained highly owner-focused, while others instinctively demonstrated traditional herding behaviours such as circling, gathering, and driving the sheep.

Caitlin commented positively on the overall temperament and control displayed by the Collies, noting how well they behaved around livestock regardless of their level of instinctive drive. Several dogs showed promising natural aptitude, and a small group progressed to additional sessions where handlers worked more independently with their dogs under guidance. All the dogs seemed to massively enjoy themselves and the day.

The event also highlighted the importance many breeders and owners place on preserving the original working instincts of Rough and Smooth Collies alongside their roles as show dogs and family companions. Some participants commented afterwards that it was nice to see the dogs as still 'fit for function' and others remarking that it was 'another thing crossed off their bucket list' as something they'd always wanted to try with their collies.

Despite some concerns raised beforehand about potential risks or negative perceptions, the day proved to be a safe, well-managed, and rewarding experience that demonstrated the breeds’ intelligence, trainability, and suitability around livestock.

The atmosphere throughout the day was friendly and enthusiastic, with participants enjoying shared learning, conversation, photography, and support from the sponsor Fettle. Everyone went home with a goody bag and a certificate.

Due to the success of the event and the interest generated, further herding days are already being planned for the future.'
