PAIGNTON 2021

ROUGH COLLIES

My first-time awarding CC’s in the breed so I would like to say thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge the Collie (Rough), at this very friendly and well organised show. Thank you also to the Exhibitors for the high quality entry.

MPD (3, 1) 1 Collins’ Triburle Chance Of Passion. Sable and white, 7 months old. Lovely head and expression, with beautiful ear carriage. Enough neck, reaching into well set shoulders. He is well bodied for his age, with good angulation and is maturing nicely. Presented in lovely coat and condition. Moved well when he got into his stride. A very promising prospect for the future and I was pleased to award him BPIB. 2 Lockyer’s Gataj Out Of The Woods. Also a 7 month old sable and white. A touch smaller all round than the winner but he is in proportion and nicely balanced. Good head properties with nice ears which he used well. Classic white collar which showed off his good reach of neck. Body shape developing nicely and in balance with his age. Presented in a pristine coat which was a credit to his owner. Just preferred the slightly more positive movement of the first, but overall two very nice puppies.

PD (2) 1 Bolt & Hollywood’s Amalie A Chance To Shine. A 9 month old sable and white, of good quality. Lovely head and expression with well used ears. Neck ok, good front and nicely balanced all round. Good coat and condition – in the challenge just preferred the slightly cleaner movement of the MPD winner. 2 Hanson’s Jards Ring Presence. 10 month old sable and white, slightly bigger all round than the winner. Head is still developing and needs a touch more maturity to complete the picture. Heavier built overall than the winner, but still in balance. Movement was a touch untidy today, as he was a little bit unsettled on the move.

PGD (2) 1 Allsopp & Allsopp’s

Aqualita Its A Miracle. Lots to like about this handsome tricoloured boy. Reasonable head planes, good eye shape and well used ears. Good reach of neck onto a straight front. Good size for a male and he is well bodied with nice angulation to front and rear. He moves well with a positive action. Handled and presented nicely but unfortunately his coat was “on the blow” which held him back from any higher awards on the day. 2 Boot’s Ladnar Iamgiant At Barotoba. Black Tri with a classic white collar. Nice head and eye shape and well used ears. Reasonable neck onto a straight front, but for my liking I would prefer slightly more bone all round, as he presents as a touch fine. Rear angulation is ok. Movement was alright when he settled.

LD (7, 1) 1 Grainger’s Samhaven Ballahanna Banjo. This young dog walked into the ring and I thought “he’s impressive!” When I then got to go over the dog and watched him move my initial impressions were confirmed. A young classically marked sable and white of great quality with a beautiful, yet masculine headpiece and well used ears. Correct reach of neck onto well angulated shoulders and a straight front. Well bodied for his age and good all round angulation which shows in his positive reach and drive on the move. For me this dog excels in moderation, with all parts being in balance and no one part detracting from the overall picture. It was a close decision in the end with the winner of OD for the top award, but the cleaner outline of this dog for me just gave him the overall edge. I was delighted therefore to award him the CC. He only very narrowly missed out on winning the breed today as he came up against what I consider to be an excellent bitch who was on top form. Congratulations and thank you again for entering him under me. 2 Cronk’s Chelborn Story Teller. Black Tri with classic white collar and good tan points. Good head and expression and well used ears. Reasonable neck and front, well bodied and presented in nice coat and condition. Good rear angulation. Solid on the move, but not quite the positive drive of the winner, however overall, still a very nice exhibit. 3 Geddes & Geddes’ Ingledene Mercury Risin JW.

OD (8, 2) 1 Congdon’s Ch/Fr Ch Jugband Blues Du Clos De Sea-Wind Via Aaronwell. Very masculine blue merle male presented in full bloom. Striking head with good moulding and balance, correct underjaw, nice eye shape and well used ears. Enough neck reaching onto good shoulders and correct front. Well bodied and nice rear assembly. Very positive on the move in all directions. Presented in lovely condition and in abundant coat. In profile I just preferred the slightly more moderate and cleaner outline of the LD winner when making the top award. Pleased to award him the RCC. 2 Grainger’s Samhaven Tri Cities. Handsome Black Tri who has a lovely moulded headpiece. With good planes and a clean blunt wedge shape. Well angulated front and rear and well bodied. Coat in clean condition and well presented, but like a few others on the day beginning to moult. Moves positively around the ring. 3 Benton & Smith’s Brooklynson El Dorado.

VD (1) 1 Rae’s Antoc Soul Mate. Sable and white, 8 years old and not looking his age. Lovely head and expression, good head planes, correct eye shape and well used ears. Lovely coat and condition. Well bodied with good angles. Would just prefer a slightly tidier rear action when moving away. Upon checking my catalogue, I found out later that he is the litter brother to the VB/RBCC winner and many of the same attributes apply. Clearly a quality litter.

MPB (3, 1) 1 Lockyer’s Gataj Good Time Girl. 7 month old sable and white with the most sweet feminine head and expression. Clean neck and good front angulation, well bodied for her age, correct rear angles and she is developing nicely. Presented in excellent coat and condition and is steady on the move. 2 Tipper & Tipper’s Tiganlea True Hearts Desire. 8 month old sable and white, nice head with good eyes and well used ears. A little bit out of proportion in her body development at present and is a touch unbalanced at the rear, but no doubt that will change as she matures. Would hope she has a touch more height when she finishes growing. Moves ok.

PB (3, 1) 1 Congdon’s Fridens Be My Lucky At Aaronwell (Imp Rus) NAF TAF. Another classically marked sable and white puppy. Nice head shape, good eye placement and well used ears. Maturing nicely with good angulation to front and rear, good body shape and outline. Coat presented in excellent condition and handled well to get the best out of her on the move. 2 Geddes & Geddes’ Ingledene Sno Angel. 9 month old blue merle. I would prefer slightly better head planes to give a more balanced head. Well used ears. Reach of neck and shoulder angulation are ok. Nicely bodied for age. Movement was ok but would prefer a cleaner front action.

JB (4, 2) 1 Patman’s Riverside Song Ice Cream Girl. Black, Tri with a good head and expression. Well angulated front and rear and good body for her age. Coat was clean and presented in good condition. A little apprehensive when being judged today, but I forgave that as this was one of the first shows post lockdown being eased and every dog and owner has had different challenges to deal with in the past couple of years. She moved ok when settled and certainly did enough to win the class. 2 Morey’s Beldones Babycham At Brookynut. A sable and white girl who is maturing nicely. She has a good head, nice eye shape and well used ears. Angulation is ok and she has a good body outline. Moves ok when settled, but not as positive overall as the winner of the class. YB (2, 1) 1 Morey’s Beldones Babycham At Brockynut (see JB).

NB (4, 1) 1 Burrows’ Revdvicki True Reflection. A very pretty black tri bitch with a good head and nice ears. Classically marked and presented in nice coat and condition. Slightly more compact in shape than some of the other bitches but still well balanced overall. Good rear angles and moved well around the ring. 2 Conway’s Amalie Coco Chanel. Sable and white with nice head, reasonable eye shape and correct ears. Nicely built and is maturing well, but was a little difficult to fully assess today as she did not want to settle on the move, however still very promising. 3 Morey’s Beldones Babycham At Brockynut.

GB (2,1) 1 Tungate’s Prince of Sunlight, Let Me Love You. A pleasing sable and white who has matured along the right lines. Lovely head and expression, good reach of neck and good angulation all round. Presented in lovely coat and condition and sensitively handled to get the best out of her on the move.

PGB (5, 1) 1 Flower’s Serenlas Heaven In Blu. A 3 year old classically marked blue merle with good head properties, nice eye shape and well used ears. Reasonable neck and shoulder angulation with a straight front. Presented in a good coat and condition and moved around the ring smoothly which tipped the class in her favour. 2 Congdon’s Starlenga All My Love To Aaronwell Taf. A 2 year old black tri who is developing nicely. Loved her clean head and soft expression, emphasised by her well used ears. Nice shoulder angulation but would prefer a touch more reach of neck which would enhance her overall outline. Good coat and condition and well bodied for her age. Movement was ok when she got into her stride. 3 Patman’s Samhaven Sound Effects.

LB (8, 2) 1 Beaden & Arrowsmith’s Saganan Blue Diamond JW. CC and BOB. The star of the day for me. An absolutely stunning young Blue Merle bitch who is in full bloom. She has the sweetest of heads, with everything in the correct proportion all finished off by beautifully set ears. Classic white collar, lovely tan points to face and legs, which helps to emphasise the correct colouring of her coat and well broken merle markings. Good angulation all round with everything in proportion. As with the dog CC winner this bitch for me exudes moderation and quality. Coat was presented in pristine condition. To complete the picture when she moves it is effortless and well balanced, with correct reach and drive at all times. A pleasure to judge and I was delighted to award her the Bitch CC and BOB. Congratulations and thank you again for entering her under me. 2 Lockyer’s Paradise Girl Du Clos De Sea-Wind For Gataj. A beautiful sable and white who took the eye immediately. Lovely headpiece with good wedge muzzle, stop and underjaw, sweet eye and expression, and correctly placed ears. Well angulated to both front and rear with strong hocks which moved her smoothly around the ring. Presented in top quality coat and condition. Another bitch that I considered seriously for higher awards on the day. 3 Walder & Walder’s Hanvale Polly Shelby JW.

OB (12, 2) 1 Smedley & Smedley’s Ch Antoc Soul Diva. A fully mature 8 year old sable and white bitch. She has a lovely head with correct eye shape, well used ears and a soft, sweet expression. Good neck reaching on to correct shoulders and good front angulation. Correct rear angulation which shows in her smooth flowing movement. Well bodied and presented in lovely coat and condition – a really top class bitch that I was pleased to award the RCC & BVIB. 2 Shipp & Shipp’s Gillyflower Della Buca Delle Fate (Imp Ita). Sable and white. I remember judging her as a youngster – I liked her then and that early promise I saw has now been delivered into a lovely bitch. She has a pretty head, good eye shape and well used ears. Good shoulders, straight front and nice rear angulation. Presented in lovely coat and condition and moved well around the ring. 3 Benton’s Brooklynson Jane Russell Of Oakestelle.

VB (1) 1 Smedley & Smedley’s Ch Antoc Soul Diva; RCC & BVIB (see OB).

SMOOTH COLLIES

JD/B (1) 1 Denton’s Brackenhaye Heart And Soul. Litter sister to the winner of the next class and many of the same comments apply. A 17 month old Tri bitch with a pleasing outline and one who is well constructed but not coarse in any way at all. Nice head and expression, good front angulation and good topline. Sound the on the move, but I would prefer a slightly cleaner rear action as she was moving a touch close behind today.

YD/B (2) Two litter sisters in this class, both of a high quality. 1 Benton’s Brackenhaye Queen Of Hearts Of Oakestelle. A quality young tri coloured bitch who is very nicely put together. Pleasing head with nice wedge shape and parallel planes, correct shaped eyes and well used ears all set off by good tan points. Lovely body shape and outline, well angulated front and rear and moved positively around the ring. Pleased to award her Best Bitch & BOB. 2 Denton’s Brackenhaye Heart And Soul.

OD/B (2) 1 Sweeney, Sweeney & Lusty’s Blamorder Do Quite Nicely. 2 year old Blue Merle bitch. Good type and quality, feminine throughout. Nice head and ears, good angulation to front and rear. Classically marked with well broken merle markings and presented in good coat and condition. Just preferred the slightly more flowing movement of the younger bitch in the challenge. Reserve Best Bitch. 2 Beeney’s Coneypark Golden Brown. 2 year old sable bitch with lots to like about her. Pleasing head, with nice eyes and good ear set. Reasonable angles to front and nicely bodied. Well presented and looks good in profile. Would just prefer a cleaner rear action as she was moving quite wide when ‘going away”
