WEST OF ENGLAND COLLIE SOCIETY OPEN SHOW - SUNDAY, 2 APRIL 2023
ROUGH COLLIE CRITIQUE
I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of this very well run and friendly show for inviting me to judge, as well as all exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me and for their good sportsmanship for my placings on the day. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and had some beautiful dogs to go over. Thank you also to my ring steward who did an excellent job in keeping the ring and me in good order. Overall I found the bitches to be of better quality than the dogs. Bites were good but dissapointingly I found a lot of teeth to be quite dirty (which is a health hazard especially as the dog gets older) and even some quite knotty coats. Many lack the beautiful rise over the loin, there are short tails, some almost square dogs with short backs and coats which lack the required texture. The standard has not changed, yet many roughs nowadays are quite a departure from what the breed should be. This is a working breed and few nowadays could work the Highland hills all day and still have energy. That said, there were some really lovely examples of the breed at the show and all were a joy to go over.

Open Dog 5/1
1st - Benton's Ch Brooklynson El Dorado ShCEx - I judged this boy some years ago and he has matured into a lovely classic collie with plenty of bone and substance. At 6 years of age he presents a very harmonious outline, suited up in a good sable/white coat with beautiful full white collar, the coat fitting him perfectly. Classic head with good planes, dark eye and kind expression, well placed ears which he used, good reach of neck flowing into level topline with good length of back and that beautiful rise over the loin I love and well set on tail perfectly carried. Well let down chest and laid back shoulder, excellent spring of rib, good angulations front and rear, well let down hock and neat feet. Plenty of drive and he moved effortlessly and in tune round the ring with his very capable handler who certainly got the best out of him on the day. All the attributes to enable him to work all day and do the job the breed was bred to do. He was excellently presented and had everything I was looking for, I was pleased to award him BD and BOB. I was delighted to see him go on to take BIS under the referee's decision. BD, BOB, BIS

Lovely young bitch who I will follow with interest in the future. BB
2nd - Flower's Serenlas Pumpkin Spice - 2 yrs and 4 months shaded sable girl who is absolutely beautiful in make and type and a very typey bitch, unlucky to meet (1) on the day but these two for me could change places any other day. Her head is balanced with good planes, flat skull, correct ear placement and carriage and a dark almond eye well placed to give a sweet collie expression. Excellent underjaw. Well laid back shoulder, lovely reach of neck flowing into good topline held well and well set on tail.
