Judges Selection and Nominations

Judges Education Programme (JEP)
Review Update & Find a Judge

As your Breed Education Coordinators, both Cathy Howard and Carole Smedley are perfectly aware that the current rules and regulations for the Judges Education Programme can sometimes be confusing, especially following the recent JEP Review and with further changes due to come into effect shortly.

We are here to help and assist both you and your Club. If you are unsure about any of the new procedures being implemented by the Royal Kennel Club following the Independent Review, please do ask us.

We would much rather you ask for advice than appoint a judge who is not permitted to judge, potentially causing concern for both the Show Secretary and exhibitors.

Your Breed Education Coordinators

Cathy Howard is available to assist all Clubs offering classes for Collie (Smooth).

Carole Smedley is available to assist all Clubs offering classes for Collie (Rough).

Both coordinators are also available to assist Sub-Group Clubs offering classes for both Rough and Smooth Collies, within their respective breeds.

Contact details for both coordinators can be found at the bottom of this page.

Important Information Regarding Judge Eligibility

The Royal Kennel Club maintains and updates its Find a Judge database, which shows the levels at which judges are currently eligible to judge.

Please check the database before making any judging appointments. If you have concerns about your selection, contact the appropriate Breed Education Coordinator.

1. Breed Club Open Shows and Championship Shows Without CCs

If a judge does NOT appear at Level 2 or Level 3 for the respective breed, they are NOT permitted to be contracted to judge at a Breed Club Open Show or a Championship Show without Challenge Certificates.

This also includes SAC classes, where applicable.

2. Championship Shows Awarding Challenge Certificates

If a judge does NOT appear at Level 4, they are NOT permitted to be contracted to judge at a Championship Show awarding Challenge Certificates.

Furthermore, judges should not be announced until their appointment appears in the Kennel Club Journal.

Appointments to award Challenge Certificates are subject to Royal Kennel Club approval (STRKCA), as the Royal Kennel Club owns the Challenge Certificates offered.

Royal Kennel Club – Find a Judge

The Royal Kennel Club's online database enables Clubs and Show Secretaries to check which judges are currently approved at the relevant level for each breed.
