‘Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware of giving your heart to a dog to tear’-
…….Rudyard Kipling

IN THE BEGINNING

What about a Pyrenean Mountain dog??
No, there’s a 2 year waiting list for a puppy.  Well, what about a Rough Collie – you’ve had one before? My husband asked.  Mmmmmm, maybe……

Some months later – Is it to show or as a pet?
To show? Oh, we didn’t think about that!

And that’s how Roughrigg began in 1985.  We enjoyed the company of Fortissat Faculty, Max, for 14 years and had lots of fun both in and out of the Ring.
Our breeding programme did not get off to a great start producing dog dominant litters.  Therefore, we moved on and obtained further lines which we had admired from the Ringside.  These included Sylcroft, Mirpet and Sachenda lines, all going back to Brettonpark and, for our only Blue, Rubec.

The following are just a few of the dogs we have had the pleasure of living with:

Lucy was truly our uncrowned Champion, our Star.  The dog who has been here before, the one you can take anywhere and will never let you down, the dog who knows what is expected and gives it all and more – the one who has oomph, aplomb, that something ‘extra’.   Lucy was all of these whether she was enjoying her walks in the field at home or in the Ring or bossing our, then, young son Christopher around.  I’m sure she thought he was an overgrown puppy which we were ‘running on!
Apart from once, by myself, Lucy was handled on every occasion by Jim.
Lucy achieved 1 CC with BOB, 2 Res CCs, Runner-up East Anglian Repnor Gold Rough Collie Club Pup of the Year 1993 and many other awards.

What can I say about Scarlett.  You know how you always wish for that ‘once in a lifetime’ animal – this was she!  My companion and showgirl.  She was to become all that we would expect from the Sachenda Kennel and our first Champion!

Murphy was never crazy about the ring but he did achieve his JW and Stud Book Number on his few outings.  He was a super stud dog and happiest waiting at home for the ladies!

Ruby gained 2 C.C.s with BOB at Working Breeds Association of Scotland 1998 and at Ayrshire Collie 2000 where she also achieved BIS.  She also took British Collie Club Bitch of the Year 1999 and numerous BOB’s including Group wins.
