Rough Collie Breed Notes
Friday 11th September 2026
Quite a busy few days for some as we cover City of Birmingham, Yorkshire Collie both with CC status and WECS Open Show and before reporting on these I extend yet another plea to all. This includes Judges, Exhibitors and Show Organisers. Please read, digest and act within the Rules and Codes of Best Practice. Failure to do so can result in class wins being withdrawn as exhibits are over-qualified. Judges fined for not adhering to rules, especially with regard to With-Holding awards and Societies appointing Un-qualified Judges. This is a hobby, some treat it as “Win at All Costs” but we all take the best dog home, win or lose and it should be enjoyable and please welcome any newer exhibitors – we need them!
Firstly, City of Birmingham, now settled at Stoneleigh, brought back memories of being held at Perry Park complete with Flower shows, a Fun Fair and the awful traffic arrangements of trying to get into the ground from the motorway. All along with the need to keep your property under close scrutiny due to numerous gangs of youngsters hoping to collect from un attended bags. In the far corner was a small running track and stadia which if anyone who watched the recent European Athletics event shows how time and modernisation happens.
Some shows are deemed “lucky” for some and again it was a good day out for the Ingledene kennel as back in 2003, with no CC allocation, and I think its first year at Stoneleigh, Best In Show ALL Breeds was Shady, or better known by her official title, Ch Ingledene Lat Nite Love. Originally judged by Birgit Hayward she went all the way under BIS Judge, Jeff Horswell.
This year, although with CC’s, Ch Ingledene Sno Wanda annexed her 8th CC, along with BOB from Joe Smith, repeating her win back in 2024 when she collected her 5th CC. Although there was to be no repeat in the group for her today.
Joe Smith, who holds the Mowgli affix, was originally based in Boxers, but over time he has added many breeds to his cv and is often seen at most shows either judging or stewarding and lives locally in Tipton. This was just his 2nd appointment for our breed, having first judged them in 2021 at Darlington. Today his entry, like many contained absentees but had started out as 66.
Special Beginners dog and Veteran Dog went to Dr Lynda Boyle with Barrenclough Heart of Gold JW,ShCEx,OSW and VW. Now nearly 9 years young he is sired by Ch Jopium Stole Mt Heart at Lingwell out of Lynda’s own Barrenclough Golden Jade and I have lost count of the numerous Sp. Beginner and Veteran wins he has collected and again another Good Citizen class, although he was the only entrant.
Minor Puppy saw Miranda and Corydon The Visionary winning her class of 3,whilst Cathy Cooper collected a win in PD with Kelekona Hearts of Fire. Jo Williams and Mejola Endeavour took Junior, another class of 3 and Lorraine Morey and Brookynut Clyde Barrow won from Kourika Dancing In Ice in Yearling. Daisy Beardsley was alone in Graduate with Marjalu Mr Lover Man, and again, alone in PG was Ingledene Absolute Legend and Val Geddes. Winning Limit, a class of 3, was the blue, Uffspring Undeniable and Jane Spendelow. Open was a better filled class, originally 7 but had 2 absent. Winning this class was Thistlewing Smoky Quarts and Brenda Welsh.
After further examination and moving, the CC went to Brenda and her boy, very interesting to note that the first time Joe judged he awarded the Dog CC to the sire of this boy, namely Ch Karafaye Scotch Blend at Thistlewing. His dam is Thistlewing Spell on You and this is first big win.
The RDCC was quickly awarded to Jane and Uffspring Undeniable, a blue who is beginning to make his presence felt as this is his 2nd RDCC. Sired by Uffspring The Understudy (a g.son of Ch Samhaven On The Crest) out of Riverside Song Narayana at Uffspring who carries lines to a few “du Clos de Sea-Wind stock) and he has just celebrated his 3rd birthday. Best Puppy dog went to Miranda and BV to Lynda and her boy.
In bitches, the classes were slightly better filled and Lynda again won Special Beginners with Destiny Star Actis Over Barrenclough JW over the other entry. Veteran, alone in her class was Ch Ingledene Sno Wanda and Val. The multi owned Afterhero Fantasma took MP whilst Sophie won Puppy with her Takhisis Lady Is A Tramp. Brookynut Happy Feet won Junior for Kathleen Morey. Mary Beardsworth handled Wicani Dulicibella Gyda Maysinder to win Yearling and also to take Good Citizen bitch class. There were no entries in Graduate and winning PG was Rob Shipp and Tremaro Million Dollar Baby. A quick lead change for the Morey’s resulted in another class win for their Brookynut Hot and Spicy in Limit.-
Open originally had 9 entered but with 3 absent and was headed by Vanessa and Ch Skabona If I Saw You In Heaven for Chelborn.
Joe asked both the Open and Veteran winners to move again and awarded the CC to Val, with Vanessa in reserve. BPB was Afterhero Fantasma, handled by co-owner Jake Walsh with Val also taking BVB and BVIB.
BOB went to Val and also BVIB; BPIB to Jake and his charge; Best Junior to Brookynut Happy Feet and Best Spl Beginners to Lynda and her bitch,
Although we did not place, or even short-list in any of the groups, the judges were: Ms Marion Sargent for the adult pastoral; David Craig for the puppy group. Keith Baldwin for Juniors, Veteran had Ernie Patterson and Gordon Hindley did Beginners, there were 2 good wins in other classes. Namely Miranda and Corydon The Visionary gained an excellent 3rd in the Eukanuba Puppy Stakes from Frank Kane, and with a change of handler, Hannah Lyall took Janine Hanson’s Jards Cudmirrah Special into the Yearling Stakes under Mr G Hinsley and returned with £5.00 for a 4th placing.
Yorkshire Collie club appeared to have tried to cover all eventualities for their Championship Show, but the weather did not play ball as all judging had to be under canvas. Held at Farmer Copley’s, Ravensknowle Farm, Pontefract with Jim McCarte (Roughrigg) for dogs and YCC had their Chairman, Tony Iley for the ladies. Smooths are also catered for here and there were 14 entered for Stefani Flower(Serenlas) and BIS was allocated to Brian Hawkins – Beldones.
It was held in a large marquee, for all but a little cramped at times. I understand quite a few of our established exhibitors and judges also made the effort to attend.
Also, good to hear from Secretary, Christine Biggs, that all comments (Both good and bad) will be noted and where possible changes will be made for future events.
Having seen just a copy of the catalogue, it would appear that were 68 entries, including a few NFC, which left 25 males and 41 females and as usual there were, due to lack of coats and illness of owners, quite a few absent. Leaving many classes with a few present.
Dogs were judged by Jim McCarte who, along with wife Morag, hold the Roughrigg affix in Scotland. Jim last judged at Lancs & Cheshire 2024 bitches. Here is a list of his class winners: Pomnenka George of The Glen took Baby Puppy, Brilyn Born to Run for Glenbowdene won Veteran; By D’Cossio Timeless Soul at Gataj won MP. Although placed 4th in his previous class, Atirakin Luminary Nights was alone, and won Puppy.2 Gataj Just Like Jesse James took Junior and Corydon World Vision, having been 3rd in MP won Maiden. Malouines Never Ending Story, alone, won Graduate. Post Grad went to Ballahanna Ballad Singer at Glenbowdene and Ladnar Call My Name JW won Limit. Open went to Ch Kourika The Gigolo.
The CC, actually his 2nd, following on from a first at Collie Club of Wales recently was Sue & Dave Randall with Ladnar Call My Name. Already holding quite a few RDCC wins, under revised RKC rules, no doubt his new Champion title will be confirmed.
The RDCC went to Ch Kourika The Gigolo, who also recently gained his title and he is sired by Kourika King Pin (to whom Jim had awarded the CC previously) out of Kourika Dressed To Thrill. BPD was the blue By D’Cossio Timeless Soul at Gataj with BVD going to Brilyn Born To Run at Glenbowdene. For Sheila Telford.
Tony Iley, along with wife Daphne have the Ileyda affix and are based in the North East, his last appointment was at Collie Club of Wales, for dogs in 2024.
His class winners included the following: Uffspring Ultravox for Coloratura (Veteran);2 Gataj Miss Sparkles (Puppy); Chantique The Witching Hour (Junior). The winner of Maiden, was the quite well-known Yvaine Angel Silvestre at Hagneetat (Imp Bel) for Steve & Almera Toogood and I understand handled by Harrison.
Gentle Image Champagne Time and Ms Penachio won Graduate. Siluto Silvary Blue Moon took PG for Gill Whittaker. Hannah Walder handled Roughrigg Red Lagertha JW to take Limit and to complete the line-up, was John Congdon’s Ch Aaronwell Able Mabel.
Taking her 3rd and qualifying CC was Roughrigg Red Lagertha and Hannah, this sable has won CC’s on an annual basis, starting with her first at LKA 2024 from Graham Hill and her 2nd at Manchester 2025 from Gary Clarke. Bred by Jim & Morag McCarte, she was born in November 2022 and sired by Hanvale Arthur Shelby at Damos out of Beldones Fun’n’Games at Roughrigg.
The RBCC went to Ch Aaronwell Able Mabel, by Ch Brilyn Intoxicated out of Riverside Song Desiderata at Aaronwell and she was born in May 2023. BPB was Gataj Miss Sparkles and BVB to Uffspring Ultravox for Coloratura.
Although the YCC schedule stated Referee and BIS was to be judged by Brian Hawkins, I am not sure how the result of Hannah and Roughrigg Red Lagertha ended up BOB Rough. As I understand that the judge, Jim McCarte withdrew! Actually, what should have happened, the owner of the BCC winner, being aware that there was a conflict of Interest (Co Judge had Bred the winner), should have withdrawn and maybe gained the respect of fellow exhibitors, after all, on the day they had gained the 3rd CC elevating it to the upper house. It was not a requirement for a Judge to Withdraw, thus compromising a contract between the RKC and YCC.
However, the result, with the approval of the show society was that Brian Hawkins judged BOB. BPIB went to Melissa and Miss Sparkles, BVIB to the rough bitch.
Brian also judged BIS which went to Hannah, with RBIS to the Smooth (judged by Stefani Flower) BPIS to Miss Sparkles and BVIS also went to the smooth entrant.
Now to West of England Collie Society who held an Open Show at their usual venue of East Huntspill Village Hall. However, the entry was very small and one actually wonders if, in these financial times, should WECS follow many of the Breed Clubs and “drop” one of their 2 Open shows?
The judges, nominated for this event were Mrs L Brookes (Bruxly) Roughs; Mrs P Jameson for Smooth, SAC Classes for Smooths only Miss H L Thomas (Mournebrake) with Committee Members, Roz MacDonald (Rossavon) Best In Show.
Ms Linda Brookes holds the Bruxly affix, which, on investigation appears to be orientated for Cocker Spaniels and she lives in Llanelli.
The original entry was 13 males and 20 females but the marked sheets sent through, very kindly by Secretary show 4 dogs and 8 bitches absent.
Her class winners were: Roughrigg Revved’n’Ready for Liz Patman; Rochview Marshall of Will for Mr J Berry; Brookynut Clyde Barrow for Lorraine Kathleen Morey all of whom were alone in their classes, but PG had 3 entries and won by Clyde Barrow. Limit, another class of 3 was headed by Sue Hawkins and Serenlas Black Magic and Open went to Twas Baron Virginia at Rochview (Imp USA) again for Mr Berry. Best Dog went to Clyde Barrow with Serenlas Black Magic in Reserve. Roughrigg Revved’n’Ready automatically was BPD.
Class winners for bitches included: Samhaven Sound Effects owned by Liz Patman jointly with Alison Grainger. With no MP, Puppy was Lynocean Loves Cast A Spell for Mrs Mason. Again, no entries in Junior, Spl Yearling was Millubie Parachute into Wassail and Di Ware; PG was Serenlas Borrowed Heaven for Ms D Hewett; Limit had 4 present and heading this was Riverside Song Ice Cream Dream Girl another for Liz Patman; Standing alone in Open was Di Ware and Wassail Call The Midwife.
Best Bitch was Riverside Song Ice Cream Dream Girl with Millubie Parachute into Wassail in Reserve. With Lynocean Loves Cast A Spell taking BPB.
BOB went to Riverside Song Ice Cream Dreams, RBOB to Brookynut Clyde Barrow. BPIB to Roughrigg Revved’n’Ready and BVIB to Samhaven Sound Effects.
BIS went to the smooth, Coldelee Take It To The Limit with Ice Cream Dream Girl RBIS.BPIS was Roughrigg Revved’n’Ready.

OUR DOGS – BREED NOTES AND SHOW CRITQUES
September 10th 2026
Following the announcement by Our Dogs, of their demise, I am pleased to confirm that Breed Notes will still continue to be published via Collielife.
This ,thanks to Julie Growcott, who will continue to issue them on a Friday morning. I have not written for Our Dogs, since May 2026, due to their publication issues, so as far as you are all concerned, viewing via Collielife will not change.
However, the continuance of these notes actually depends on contribution by many who attend or even win at shows. To enable this to continue, I ask, on behalf of all that maybe you are able to contribute. I shall continue to write, within the rules of Our Dogs, to included any wins, within the breed for BOB / BP etc, providing they obtain a Group Place. Otherwise, every BOB at every show would require to be added and with the number of shows held, this is not feasible.
This will involve input from both Exhibitors and, if at all possible, Club Officials to give copies of show details to be included. I may be contacted on ca.antoc@btinternet.com
SHOW CRITIQUES
Judges are advised to submit their reports to the only current site run by the RKC but often this is not available therefore, I ask, on behalf of many that a copy of your show report is also sent direct to Julie Growcott using email collielife1@gmail.com
