20th October 2023
All the action this weekend took place in Wales! With CCW Open Show and SWKA, for the last time without CC’s as next year we do have a CC allocation, so make a note in your diary.
CCW under the guidance of Secretary, Christine Collins and a few helpers held their show at Bassaleg, Newport with their renown refreshments and cakes, another reason to attend. The judges were Doug Bedford (Chateaunewf) for Roughs, Smooths were judged by Georgina Howard (Casatentola) and she also judged the rough SAC classes and Doug officiated over the smooth SAC classes. Among raffle prizes there was a special draw of two £25 cash prizes for those buying raffle tickets. Lucky recipients were Rob and Margaret Shipp and Shelley Skinner.
Sadly, and probably due to extenuating circumstances, the entry for roughs was small, made worse by the number of absentees on the day.
Shelley Skinner won both MP and Novice as the only entrant in each class with Neo, Ladnar Makeithappen for Nikal. Gataj Turn Back Time won Spl Yearling but in Limit, stood 2nd behind Starlenga Harry Potter with Elshajo. Gataj Out of The Woods won Open, beating No More Heroes du Clos de Sea-Wind. With no males entered in the mixed Veteran class, Best Dog was declared as Gataj Out of The Woods JW for Melissa and Rob Shipp took RBD with Flash, No More Heroes and Best MP and Puppy was Neo.
SAC classes were judged by Georgina who found her class winners in Gataj All That Sparkles; Most Majestic Timeless Touch at Samshernik (Imp Hungary) and Jemspark Maid In Secret.
Bitches had slightly more present on the day, but alone in Puppy was Gataj All That Sparkles; Rob Shipp then won Spl Yearling with Tremaro Kind of Magic and Novice with Tremaro Cast A Spell, a sister. Paulara Lucy In The Sky with Elshajo won PG but it was not until Limit where there were more than 1 in the class. Sophie and Takhisis Lady of Mystery took this with Elshajo Adored in 2nd and Most Majestic Timeless Touch in 3rd.
Open, alone was Gataj Good Time Girl and Melissa who was then declared BB with Sophie in RBB and Gataj All That Sparkles took BPB.
Even though Graham was in attendance, I understand it was in an “advisory” capacity, so Melissa had to call on friends to handle in both challenges and would like to take the opportunity to thank all concerned.
Best of Breed went to Gataj Good Time Girl, RBOB to Takhisis Lady of Mystery; BOSIB to Gataj Out of The Woods and BPIB to another owned by Melissa in the form of Gataj All That Sparkles and Sue Beare took BVIB with Jemspark Maid In Secret who won the mixed Veteran class beating Shelly and Mia (Samhaven Time Is Money with Nikal
BIS judged by Jayne Llewellyn (Salsina) who ended up with BIS to Gataj Good Time Girl, RBIS to Takhisis Lady of Mystery; BOSIS in show to the smooth; BPIS to Gataj All That Sparkles and BVIS also to the smooth.
A note from Chris Slater, on behalf of Collie Rescue to advise that the AGM will be held 11th November at the Princess Royal Sheffield, S13 9WG starting at 12 noon and also to advise that both Calendars and Xmas Cards are now available.
Now to a little more show news, at North of Scotland Sheepdog Society, at Newtonhill Aberdeen, Abby Lusty was judging and BIS was Miranda Blake and our breed had some good results as Roughrigg Ragnfid, owned by Ms J Barr won Puppy, BPIB and the BPIS from Miranda. Bred by Morag & Jim McCarte, she is a sister to their very well-known Roughrigg Red Lagertha and another sister, Roughrigg Ranna in the ownership of Mrs D Haslam-Craib was also 2nd in puppy and won Novice at the same show. Well done to all concerned
Now to SWKA, held at the Royal Welsh Showground saw Nigel Price (Landover) judging, this, as stated above is the last year without CC’s as next year our breed has Tracey Gartland (Arcot) judging on her first Rough appointment although she already awards CC’s in Shelties.
Taking BOB was Ch Samhaven Ballahanna Banjo for Alison Grainger with Ingledene Dark Moon Risin’ owned by Rachel Tilley taking Reserve BD.BB went to Valerie and Ingledene Sno Wanda with Sophie taking another RBB with Takhisis Lady of Mystery. BOB went to Alison, there were no Puppies or Veterans entered.
Finally, some sad news from Northumberland & Durham, Jill Oliver, former Secretary, writes, concerning Robert Crozier who died at the age of 84:
'I have known Robert for many years, as a friend, exhibitor and Committee Member and Life Vice-President of Northumberland & Durham Collie Club.
Robert, with wife Pauline, started their interest in the Rough Collie in the early 1970’s. They had, like most of us, moderate success and produced winners for their Lasheen kennel, Notably, Ch Lasheen Rhapsody In Black, a pretty tri bitch who won the CC at Crufts in 1986. Another Ch Lasheen Stolen Property for Jefsfire went to the late Alan & Kath Jeffries, who also gained his title and there was also Ch Lasheen Simply Red at Lynway who went to the Walsh family in Ireland and was successfully campaigned in both countries to his title.
Robert served on the Committee of N&DCC for many years and was as Vice-Chairman, my “Right-Hand” man during my tenure as Secretary.
He always had a smile and kind word for everyone attending the shows and just a few weeks ago was playing Badminton, which he had done regularly for about the last 20 years.
To wife Pauline, daughter Justine and grandchildren Carmen and Freya, I offer my sincere condolences. – Jill Oliver (Rixown)'
I am sure that we too offer our sympathy and once any further details are known, they will be posted.
