I was sad to hear the news that Maurice Haslam had passed away in hospital  recently. Some of our newer exhibitors may not be aware of his tireless work in promoting the Southern Collie Club (Proposed). Based in the south of England, Maurice, along with many others like Janet James (Deanjan) promoted the breed by providing events for the breed and numerous talks on the Breed Standard by such established names as the late Hugh Jones (Seafire) and the late Lisa Burtenshaw (Pelido)to name just two.
This club, although it never attained full KC recognition ,was the grounding for many exhibitors and collie folk and was established for many years. Maurice, along with his wife Carol held the Lyswood affix and produced some regular winners, including, Lyswood Pure Genius, L Christmas Carol, L Brahms Lullaby and quite a few attained their KCSB numbers . Based on breeding from Pelido, Brettonpark and Lingwell and Maurice himself was an approved CC awarding judge and officiated at with a first appointment at L&P in 2007, followed by appointments as NWPBDS, SKC and a final appointment at Windsor in 2018.
To his wife, Carol, his sons and family along with close friends, we recall Maurice with affection and thank him for his work in promoting our breed.
His funeral will be held November 1st, at 1.30pm at Surrey & Sussex Crematorium, Balcombe Road, Crawley West Sussex  RH10 3NQ
Back to last weekend, and the SCC of GB held their Ch show and also scheduled classes for roughs with an entry of 42, no doubt helped by the fact that it was held alongside the CA 90th Anniversary show. The judge for both Smooths and Roughs was Janice Cook (Foxbell) from Australia. Her main winners were: John & Miranda with Corydon The Baron, who took BD, RBD went to Kelekona Hearts of Gold JW for Cathy Cooper and BPD to Essanjay Ring of Fire for Jan Williams. Best Bitch went to Marianne Benton with Keira, Ch Brooklynson Jayne Russell of Oakestelle VW ShCEx with Ch Corydon Clarissa taking RBB for John & Miranda. BPB went to Sophie Wray Ramsden and Takhisis Xtraodinary Lady. At the end of the rough judging, BOB went to Marianne and Keira who was also BVIB and BVIS, with Essanjay Ring of Fire taking BPIB.
A Lovely news in from Dr Lynda Boyle as she now has another Veteran Warrant, the 4th such award for her small kennel. This is with her Blue Merle, Skye, officially known as Monsolana Butterfly Blue Over Barrenclough who now holds a JW, ShCm and a VW
Finally, news from Collie Club of Wales who held their Open show at Bassaleg% under the guidance of Secretary Christine Collins and her small committee. CCW may be small in numbers by way of committee but they are very big on welcoming all and well known for their hospitality and generosity to anyone who attends their shows, the same could have been said at this last event.
This show was judged by Sue Beare (Jemspark) for roughs and Sue Hawkins (Brilyn) for smooths but only had a total entry of 39
A baby puppy class was scheduled to start the day off and it was well filled with the winner being Tremaro Special Agent for Rob & Margaret Shipp. Best dog was Stefani Flower’s Androma Dreamcatcher at Serenlas (Imp Svn) with RBD going to Melisa and Salsina’s Red Hot Crush with Gataj and BPD, who was also BMPD , also to Melissa with Gataj Perfect Timing. For the ladies, BB was Di Ware and her recent CC winning, Millubie Essence of Magic at Wassail (Imp Srb). RBB was Hannah & Simon’s Roughrigg Red Lagertha JW. Gataj Exotic Girl took BPB for Melissa and Best Veteran Bitch was Jo Denton’s Brooklynson Jolene at Rifflesea who had won the mixed Veteran class.
BOB was Di Ware with her tricolour, RBOB was also a bitch, Roughrigg Red Lagertha with Stefani and her Androma Dreamcatcher declared BOSIB, BPIB went to Melissa and BVIB to Jo Denton.
Sue Beare also judged the SAC classes confined to Smooths and the Smooth BOB, judged by Sue Hawkins was Keira Martin and Sturtmoor Arceus’s Legacy who was made BIS by Abby Lusty.

And finally, Collie Rescue AGM is on Sunday 17th November @ 12 noon and will be held at The Princess Royal Hotel, Retford Road, Woodhouse, Sheffield S13 9WG.
